It's not uncommon for me to get contacts from recruiters these days. What is uncommon is having contacts from these folk who appear to have read my resume or profile. I've got a current resume on Monster- i figure it doesn't hurt to have some concept of what's available in the market, even if i'm not necessarily looking actively- if someone were to come along and offer a fifty percent increase on what i'm making now, it'd be really tempting. For that matter, if someone offered better insurance, it'd be tempting.

This morning's email included a ping from a recruiter looking for a .Net developer with Arabic fluency to work a 3-6 month contract in Florida. Those of you who have been here long enough to remember my MS days working in Office know all too well how i feel about Arabic— nothing against the people who speak or read it, but the language looks like what happens if i turn [livejournal.com profile] scootercomputer loose with a pencil and a sheet of paper, there simply isn't anything about the written form of the language- especially when properly done with kasheedas and character folding- that makes anything really distinguishable as letters to me, and that it was extremely frustrating to work in an environment where i couldn't read anything.

I couldn't help myself. I had to give the recruiter some tsuris for not bothering to do any real prequalification:

Hello, >name redacted to protect the guilty<,

I have to ask- do you read the resumes you pull, or do you just search on keywords? I'm really curious how I'd have passed any sort of screening for this position, and the only possible qualifiers I can think of are having experience working with the Complex Scripts languages and having worked in a .Net environment.

If you read my resume and Monster.com profile, you'll see that I'm looking for project management roles, although I'd consider test management on a case-by-case basis; that I'm not a developer; the CS language with which I have any real experience speaking or reading is Hebrew- and no fluency in it; that I'm working full time in the metropolitan Seattle area and have no interest in either relocating or taking a short term contract.

I wish you well in finding an acceptable candidate for your position. Perhaps if you refine your search a bit better and don't cast so broadly you'll manage to actually reach the people with the skills you seek.

Regards,
