Jun. 1st, 2002 11:04 pmInteresting day. Wedding in Renton, visit to Ikea, the Half-Price Books in the U District on the way home. Probably spent too much money, but we got some things which will be useful at very least, and some fun things as well.
Hope Gwynn and Lauren has weather as good as we had here today, and look forward to seeing them on Tuesday. Hey, you two, if you happen to see this, we'll probably be down there in the 10-10:30 area, so you don't have to get up too early on our account. ;-)
I'm a little confused by something that's happening. I've been having a conversation with someone in environments which aren't really conducive to having real discussions, and, as a direct result, we haven't managed to get much real talking in. I think we've both expressed a clear interest in doing so, and said we'd trade e-mail to come up with a mutually feasible time. Unfortunately, i've sent a few pieces of mail- three- over the past week, but haven't gotten any e-mail in response. Now, i realize than not everyone responds to mail immediately- i usually do, because otherwise i forget to respond, but it'd seem as if a response shouldn't take a week. Here's the quandry- since we occasionally run into one another in public, do i just let e-mail go, and figure that we can plan something ad hoc in one of these encounters; do i continue making suggestions, and figure one of them will eventually work; or is the ball completely out of my court now, and i let it go until i merit some sort of a response?
I'm interested in getting to know this person a bit better, so i want to make sure to follow up on things as much as possible, but at the same time i don't want to be a nuisance. Any ideas on this quandry? Never been particularly skilled with the social graces, and at a time like this, it's reasonably evident.

Date: 2002-06-02 11:20 am (UTC)Sometimes email really doesn't get through. Most email programs will let you request a return receipt and a fair number of servers will actually send the return receipt when the mail gets through. But even then, I've seen mail queued up on final servers that doesn't get dropped into an actual inbox.
Also, I sometimes forget to respond to emails, and I may go weeks without doing so. My inbox at work receives something on the neighborhood of 100 to 200 emails a day on average. Stuff can easily get buried. Plus I have my own issues with shyness that I sometimes just don't respond because I don't know what to say or what I want to say sounds uninteresting.
My suggestion, ask em, "Did you get my message about X?" Doesn't help to get all righteous about things when a simple question will clear these things up. Also, make sure you put "about X" in your question, unless you've only ever sent them one email message. And if they say "no, I didn't get the message" take it as either the truth or a little white lie to save some face because of being a retard. Then pull em aside and try to make the plans right then and there. By aside, I mean outside the Merc or the Fish to where there isn't a crowd to interrupt and make your plans.
I've taken that tactic more than once. It's usually worked.
