From CNN:
Rep. Tom Tancredo made his remarks Friday on WFLA-AM in Orlando, Florida. His spokesman stressed he was only speaking hypothetically.

Talk show host Pat Campbell asked the Littleton Republican how the country should respond if terrorists struck several U.S. cities with nuclear weapons.

"Well, what if you said something like -- if this happens in the United States, and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims, you know, you could take out their holy sites," Tancredo answered.

"You're talking about bombing Mecca," Campbell said.

"Yeah," Tancredo responded.

The congressman later said he was "just throwing out some ideas" and that an "ultimate threat" might have to be met with an "ultimate response."

Spokesman Will Adams said Sunday the four-term congressman doesn't support threatening holy Islamic sites but that Tancredo was grappling with the hypothetical situation of a terrorist strike deadlier than the September 11, 2001, attacks.

"We have an enemy with no uniform, no state, who looks like you and me and only emerges right before an attack. How do we go after someone like that?" Adams said.

"What is near and dear to them? They're willing to sacrifice everything in this world for the next one. What is the pressure point that would deter them from their murderous impulses?" he said.

I'd like to make the congressman a counteroffer. How about this, Mr. Tancredo? We stick you in a bomb casing and drop you over Afghanistan, where you can run around making batshit insane statements like this in the company of other religious extremists. Hell, maybe you can find bin Laden.

Does anyone reading this think that bombing Mecca would have any sort of positive effect? Don'tcha think that it might, y'know, make things worse by pissing off the Muslim population of the entire world and giving them all a reason to hate us and work toward actively destroying the US and anyone who would dare stand as an ally? Maybe we need to force the United States of Jesusistan to separate before this happens-— so that the sane folk could say "Hey, look. We had nothing to do with this. Why don't you go nuke their capital or holy place (which i'd propose should be either Bentonville, Arkansas or Branson, Missouri.

Nope. No one here. Maybe on the LJ republican community you'd find someone who thought that was a good idea.

Wish I had the money to leave the country.

People like that just need to be slapped--no, I take that back. Slapping them won't do any good. People like that just need to be taken to a deserted island somewhere and left to die. Here's an idea, how about we take all of our fundamentalist Christians and exchange them for the fundamentalist Muslims. I'd rather have their nut-jobs than ours.

I live (currently) within about 6 blocks of this guy's office. Believe me, he is definitely a fucking nutjob and goes off about the littlest things. Never petition him, it takes an act of God to get off his mailing list.

Tom Tancredo has been a bit out there for a long time. Maybe there isn't enough ozygen to truly support brain functions when you are over a mile high!

yah never know. although I was born here, I think I need a bit of fresh air. part of the reason I'm moving is the increasingly conservative and intolerant atmosphere.

Ah, more high-quality political discourse. ::sigh:: What a jackass. This here is why I'm reluctant to move back to the US.
