Aug. 16th, 2002 12:57 amWhat an interesting day.
After my appointment with my counsellor, it was time to head south.
damashita and alexander were going to visit her "second mom" who is also the person who tipped us off about the place in Magnolia, and i was going wandering downtown.
Ended up not getting to hang out with
mediavore in spite of having tentative plans to do so. After seeing her two most recent journal posts prior to leaving, i ended up revising my expectations and figuring she probably wasn't in the mood for company and wasn't going to call, but that i was going to wander because it's something i needed to do for me. I was still a little disappointed, but such is life, and, given the things i'm working through and that i was in a pretty grumbly, stompy mood for the first bit i was wandering, it was probably for the best.
Did a lot of wandering. Talked to the guy at the jewelry and amber stall, who said that he'd been expecting to see me all day, and he spent the next fifteen minutes or so while we were talking trying to figure out from where it was he knew me. Weird.
Wandered down to Lark in the Morning and looked at the musical instruments- primarily the harps and whistles. Got to play for a few moments on a Clarke low B flat whistle (pitched an octave below a pipe chanter) which was really neat, but expensive. Didn't dare play the harps. Also stopped in at Cibola and said hi to Deb, the owner there, who i met when doing some pre-wedding research for
gwynn_aaron. By the time i left the Market, i'd pretty much stopped waiting for a call from
mediavore, and overcome the temptation to indulge in a double shot of Jamison's with a Caffery's back. Walking is a better thing for me anyway when i'm working through things, and certainly more theraputic than problem drinking.
Walked from the Market down 1st Avenue, and saw a shot which begged to be captured. Moon over Seneca Street should be pretty self-explanatory just from the title. I'd actually wanted it to be Union, but couldn't frame the shot in such a way to get the moon between the buildings and crop the Lusty Lady sign out of the image, and the latter just didn't feel right, so this was a block and a half farther down. Sorry the moon's not more visible- this didn't turn out quite as well as i'd hoped. Besides, the Sting song inspired by Anne Rice's Interview With a Vampire has been stuck in my head, and this was the closest i could get to Bourbon Street.

Walked down to Pioneer Square to see the reconstruction of the Pergola, and shot several images there:
Decided that i'd also resist the temptation to go on the Underground Tour- it'll have to wait until i'm not carrying something metal (if this doesn't make sense, ask and i'll point you to the draft-in-progress of my novel)- in favour of doing so
From there, i walked back to Pike, up the Hill to Broadway, up Broadway to visit the used CD stores there, stopping to grab this shot of the Washington State Convention and Trade Center because it reminded me of something i'd expect to see in an M. C. Escher print with the building reflecting in itself.
After there, it was back down Pine, behind the Market down to the waterfront, south along Alaskan Way as far as Safeco Field, then back to meet
damashita and alexander for dinner. I figure i probably walked 10-12 miles all told, with my knee screaming at me after the first stompy bits (hint for all of you out there who don't have cartiledge damage in one of your knees- be nice to them, or they'll never let you forget it, especially when walking distances or climbing stairs or hills. If you've seen me out at the Merc and wondered why i rarely dance, this is a big part of it.). Also, when my knee starts hurting, i tend to overstride slightly trying to compensate for it, so my hip hurts too. I'll probably hobble around slightly the next day or two, but i got a lot of thinking done without being completely alone. Sometimes it helps to be alone in the company of strangers.

Date: 2002-08-16 09:02 am (UTC)Thank you for the pergola pictures. When blackfyr and I were in Seattle last, we were sorry to see it had fallen. It looks like they're coming along nicely on restoring it, though.
