OK, so being sick has been absolutely no fun at all- at least the being sick part of it. The lying in bed and/or lazing about the house all day hasn't been too bad, though. It's given me the chance to stage a mini movie festival. Screenings so far have included:
  • Bedazzled- This happened to be on HBO last night, and i love Brendan Fraser's sense of comic timing, even if this wasn't one of his best roles. Still it was on, and gave me the idea.

  • The Truth About Cats and Dogs- Janeane Garofalo as a strong, intelligent, witty woman. If she were just a bit taller and a redhead, she'd simultaneously hit all my archetypes. 'Nuff said.

  • Ever After- Drew Barrymore can actually act, and the costuming and visuals in this retelling of Cinderella are worth the price of admission in and of themselves.

  • My Fair Lady- Audrey Hepburn. Need I say more? Shaw's Pygmalion is one of my favourite plays as well, and Rex Harrison is the ultimate Professor Henry Higgins.

  • Alexander Nevsky- I found both of my copies of this GosFilm classic. The work of Sergei Eisenstein, who i can best describe as the Soviet John Ford; with stunning musical score by Sergei Prokofiev, freshly re-recorded by the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. The Germans might have thought twice about attacking Russia in 1941 if they had seen this film beforehand. The message was clear back then. In the words of Alexander Nevsky himself: "Do not enter Russia with a sword in your hand." Well, you can't say they weren't warned.

  • Still to come:
Ladyhawke and a film to be determined at time of viewing- likely either Pleasantville or Grosse Point Blank

Drew Barrymore can act, but I still think "Ever After" was crap.

Soviet John Ford? Personally, I'd say Eisenstein was closer to being the Soviet Orson Welles.

Don't hold me on this, but I believe it's from Angel Sanctuary. It's an anime.

    My Take...

Okies, since I love film I had to comment -

"Bedazzled" - Not seen this yet, only snatches, but what I've seen I like :-)

"The Truth About Cats and Dogs" and "Alexander Nevsky" - Not seen these either, I shall have to look out for them.

"Ever After" - A wonderful film and one of my favourites ... Dougray Scott is good in this too, and after all any Anjelica Houston film is worth its weight in gold ;)

"My Fair Lady" - Oh yes, absolutely.

"LadyHawke" is a must-see classic, one I've wanted on DVD for a long while now. I enjoyed both "Pleasantville" and "Grosse Point Blank" very much, though if I had to choose between them, I'd say, "I killed the President of Paraguay with a fork ... How're you doin'?" [WEG]

oh, much better now. A few days worth of antibiotics seem to have pretty thoroughly started the process of clearing this up.

Oh, yes. Other than Bedazzled which was on TV, i own all the other movies in the list. Grosse Point Blank was the final selection, just because i've seen Pleasantville more recently- i watch it probably every six weeks or so.

    And oh yes...

I'd be tempted to add "Moulin Rouge" as well. :-)
