After surprising the President's Trophy winning San Jose Sharks in the opening round of the playoffs, the Anaheim Ducks faced a stiffer challenge in the second round- the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.
The better team won. In spite of brutally bad officiating which didn't match up to WHL calibre at times. And, fittingly enough, the deciding goal was itself subject to some small measure of controversy- some would contend that Danny Cleary of the Wings pushed Anaheim goaltender Jonas Hiller into the net- and the puck with him. Replays showed, though, that Hiller didn't control the puck, which allowed Cleary to poke it into the back of the net for the deciding goal.
