Ah, the joys of impending hockey season!
The Red Wings have exercised their option year on Brendan Shanahan's contract, ensuring that he'll be in the red and white this season; and have also tendered an offer to Steve Yzerman, which should mean that the Captain will be back in the Winged Wheel for a farewell tour as well.
No big moves from the Senators yet. I'd think that they're probably waiting to see what other teams do with regard to buyouts before making significant signings, but the only real high profile unrestricted free agent they have is Peter Bondra although they do have a fairly sizable cadre of restricted free agents including Havlat, Hossa, Spezza and Fisher, not to mention Martin Prusek, who will probably start quite a bit if Dominik Hasek returns to his pulled-groin form after a season of inactivity. As scary a thought as having the unseasoned Prusek backstopping the team is; if there's a significant acquisition from the ranks of free agency as far as Ottawa goes, look for a goalkeeper to be it- there are a few who are amongst the unrestricted ranks, ranging from the wouldn't touch (Felix Potvin, Arturs Irbe, Corey Schwab, Garth Snow) to the possibles (Chris Osgood, Sean Burke) and the "if they're available at an affordable price" pool (Curtis Joseph, Nikolai Khabibulin).
Season opens 5 October, Detroit hosting St. Louis, Ottawa on the road at Toronto.

Think goalie - the Avs really need to develop a good goalie....
Sorry, can't think of anything nice to say about the Wings - but we agreed to disagree......
