I've spent much of the evening "knitting" ring-mail. I now have a new found respect for the process by which this stuff was made. Four-in-one looks to be pretty simple when you look at one set of five rings. Even linking in one dimension isn't that much of a challenge- just stay consistent with the pattern, and follow it for whatever length. Where it gets tricky is adding the second dimension.
Regardless, working out whether the joining ring goes over or under is a great mental exercise, especially when trying to figure out the pattern. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to have something to do with his/her hands- besides, if you get good at it, it commands reasonably good prices in certain places.

Our friend Griffin the leather guy used to do a lot of chain mail - I tried on a full mail shirt/hauberk once - basically his most prized mail item, worth a few hundred at least - and godDAMN that thing was heavy! One thing that can be said for mail shirts, they certainly promote good posture, because if you slouch you'll fall over.
Anyway, from what I've seen, it sounds like an entertaining pursuit. Did you decide to do this and go out and get supplies, or just have a bunch of spare heavy-gauge wire hanging around?

Actually, i'm working with a fairly light wire- only 14 (possibly 12- i can't remember for certain which i bought) gauge, and i'm not really planning on reselling- i'd have to have a lot more proficiency doing it first of all, and would probably, being a neo-perfectionist, end up soldering all the rings rather than just butting them as i'm doing now.
Anyway, it's giving me something to do with my hands.

Have I mentioned lately that you have some interesting (but strange) hobbies? ;)

As Lauren said, Griffin used to do this. He ended up damaging his wrists and destroying a lot of hand tools. Do yourself a favour and use Craftsmen® pliers and wire cutters so that when they wear out you can replace them for free.
