Borrowed from [livejournal.com profile] asciikitty

given a nine digit number abcdefghi:

ab MUST be divisible by 2.

abc by 3

abcd by 4

and so on.

you have the whole numbers 1 through 9 to play with, no repeats, no using 0.

have fun!

i've found an answer.

if you find an answer, DON'T post it, in case people want to play and don't want to know- send me e-mail.

Note: ab is a number like 12, say. abc is a number like 123. not a*b, or a*b*c. sorry for the confusion

I found one, and it's pretty nice, but I keep getting really close to a more elegant number. Is there a solution you know of that's really mathematically pretty, or are they just some numbers?

I'm just being a perfectionist, I guess. One of my favourite extracurriculars in high school was Math Club (which consisted of taking math tests once a month) so yeah, I'm a nerd ;)

yeah, i keep wanting it to be elegant, but those answers don't seem to work.

I'm amused that it's probably someone's social security number, but yeah, the number itself isn't particularly elegant. Although, the piece of paper on which i played with it now is really pretty with little matricies of digits scattered about....

Nope. Not a valid SSN, but if it were, it's in the range allocated to Michigan.

I'm pretty convinced that there is only one answer. Either that, or my code is wrong. I analyzed the problem down to a space of 576 possibilities, and then tried each of them by brute force... only one of them worked.

I'd like to come up with a more elegant solution that allows me to find that one number, but so far I've been unable to do so.

Yaaaay! I feel normal now. My first thought upon seeing the puzzle was "Hmmm. Wonder how long it'd take to write something in C# or VB to come up with the answer." Then i decided it'd be more fun and quicker to do it by hand.
