Calling it a night on the writing, just a touch short of 3,200 words. Not as much because I'm tired but more because it's time to do more research- this time on non-flammable ways of making airship skins and minimizing weight.

Here's a little clip from the beginning, for anyone who might be interested, with the caveat that this is draft 0 quality.

The wireless operator came into the airship’s control cabin with a message for the Minister of Commerce. “Your Lordship, the sea and aeroport in St. John’s has cleared us for immediate landing. Word has it that the Prime Minister would like to speak with you as well.” “All’s well wi’ both, of those, William, me b’y. We’ll be landing presently, so if you’d let Lady Doyle know, I’d be appreciating it. I’m sure she’d as well. After that, if you’d let our other passengers know that Ferryland Sealer will be returning to the surface, and we should be down and on our ways home within the hour.” With that, the pilot returned his focus to the controls, easing the control surfaces to bring his craft a point to port and beginning the descent.

James Doyle, Minister of Commerce for the newly minted Republic of Newfoundland, had become an important man, but since figuring out the design for his engine and then figuring out aeronautical applications for it, preferred to keep the controls in his own hands. Officially, the craft had its own pilot and co-pilot, but when the man who owned it designed it, was capable of flying it, sat on the board responsible for certifying the airship officers, and wanted to, it was easier to avoid the arguments which would inevitably be lost and let him do so.

The craft was a work of art, showing lineage from seafaring ships, the new ocean liners, and railcars. Polished spruce and brass fittings were visible throughout the gondola of the ship, outfitted for transporting passengers rather than goods, with attentions paid to the comfort of those who travelled within. In this case, the Ferryland Sealer was returning with a delegation from a conference in Montreal discussing tariffs and trade with representatives of the Canadian and United States governments.

The Confederation vote had failed in 1869, with the pro-Confederation government being resoundingly swept from power and Governor Musgrave being sent into the annals of history as something of a failure, while Charles Fox Bennett’s stock was on the rise as the champion of anti-Confederation voices. A third set of voices was on the rise- favouring neither the union with Canada nor remaining an outpost of the British Empire, but rather taking the island and its inhabitants in the direction of separation from both, powered by the Doyle Engine and the revolutionary effects it had on shipping, timber harvesting, and commerce in general.
