Those Wacky Newfoundlanders

In doing a spot of research to verify that places were where i thought i'd remembered they were (specifically Torbay and Ferryland, for those of you who might be interested), i happened upon a placename that amused me, even for the Rock.



Look at the lower left hand of the map, about due East of Bay Roberts, and note the name of the township of about 1200 residents there. Yes, dear friends, Dildo, Newfoundland and Labrador. Personally, i'm of the opinion that it was something foisted on the Newfoundlanders on 1 April 1949, but i'm sure the descendents of Joseph Smallwood or Sir Albert Walsh might have differing opinions.

I miss the Rock. Can I go back? Haven't been there more than visiting since we moved when I was 7 or so.

Today has been pretty much a wasted day on the work front. I've been dealing with little SQL oddities and timeouts all day, and keep feeling as if i'm never going to get it all done. My motivation level has been similarly low, probably with direct causal connexions with the fact that nothing is working properly.

Time goes so much more slowly when i'm not feeling productive, so i've been looking at different web calendars (shadowdaddy, i know you've got one already on the server, and at some point we should walk through its strengths and limitations), hoping to find one that will provide the ability to generate a dynamic event listing without requiring a real database backend, but pulling from a text file or the like- to use as a short-term fix for my headache-inducing website. At very least, it'd be an improvement over what's there currently, and any steps which can be made enabling someone else to do the data entry would be a big plus.

Off to the Key Arena for game 3 of the Seattle Thunderbirds-Kelowna Rockets playoff series. T-birds lead the series 2-0, with tonight's game being the first game played at home after taking the two road wins.

Hockey game: badgame, but still hockey. Hanging out with damashita and shadowdaddy- to say nothing of the boys was much better. Must do so again sometime soon.
