We're WIRED
Jun. 12th, 2003 05:59 pmYup. Yesterday, they installed cable internet. Hooked the cable modem up to a wireless router. Access in the living room!
Then the fun part. Enabled Wireless Ethernet Protocol 128-bit encryption to make the whole thing a bit more secure. Unfortunately, there's an important bit missing from the configuation instructions for doing so- you can enable WEP on the router, but you can't do so from a wireless connection. Trying to do so hopelessly confuses things so that machines can't ping the router successfully, much less reach anything else. Yeah, it's all wireless, but you need a conventional CAT-5 connection to set the security. Weird. And, of course, there's not a single conventional ethernet card in the house, and the connector is missing from the card for the laptop. Not really happy about being unsecure, but for the time being i'll firewall it to death.
