This somehow makes these devices considerably less compelling.

Swiped from [livejournal.com profile] ajka, iPod's Dirty Secret.

Meanwhile, we sit at work and wait for a new build. Initial impressions are that the developers are somewhat sloppy checking in, or the build process itself is fucked. I'd bet on the latter. We really need someone to do that job- and, as chance has it, currently have an opening for just such a being. Check [livejournal.com profile] seattlejobs if you want details about the position.

There goes all my lust for them. Though to be fair, there is a "Battery back-up" at the Apple Store going for £49 (one sixth of the price of the 20Gb ipod). However, to me the main attraction of the ipod is the small size, and having to add a bulky extra battery makes them a lot less attractive.

Maybe I should look at a Zen instead, though they don't run on standard batteries either. But honestly, who would want to have a 18 months old electronic device? CONSUME!!!

Check my reply to the original post. The person who put up that site is not exactly a reputable source for information and has deliberately set out to badmouth Apple because they're annoyed.

Ok, I've read the whole thread and Slashdot's information. However I do understand the annoyance a bit, *if the quoted $200 was true at the time of filming*. I don't expect a rechargeable battery to last forever, but while getting a replacement for free after a year and a half is wishful thinking, I wouldn't expect to pay two thirds of the original price of the item either, when Apple itself sells the old ipod units with a discounted 35% and with 1 year warranty, and the part can be get online for $49 as someone points out in that thread. If you check the slashdot news cited on the community, the article was out just last friday, that means that by the time the movie was done it is quite possible that the charges were as much. It also cites "After much complaining from iPod owners, Apple has finally started an official Official iPod Battery replacement". What I read there is that there wasn't such an option available before; again, not a good move.

I don't have a problem with the iPods themselves, they are a lovely piece of electronics. I wouldn't have a problem with them lasting a certain amount of time, as electronics normally do. But if (notice the conditional) the information that changing a battery was as much as quoted, effectively forcing you to throw it away and get a newer one, and when a new battery procured through other means was a quarter of that price, I would have a problem with that, as it feel unnecessarily wasteful. The new battery replacement policy seems a lot better, though it's still around 1/3 of the price of the product and still not available for the newer models yet. Sadly it isn't available in Europe either.

Just my 2c.

My personal squawk with it was the flippant "well, for that amount of money you should just go buy a new one" attitude that the support person dished out. I'd have wanted his supervisor in the phone immediately after that. There's a way to tell someone that something's going to cost money, and quite another to handle it the way he did.

well, there is that to it too. I don't like support people as they usually seem to asume you're an idiot. However, my only experience with Apple was quite good on that respect with the two people I spoke to, so I was quite surprised with that.

Microsoft, on the other hand... good grief. Only one call, and I hope I never have to do it again! LOL

Our iPod must be a prodigy then, as it's over 2 years old and the battery is going strong. Considering how hard it is to disassemble an iPod safely to get to the battery, I can understand why it costs a lot of money, though I'd bet that price has come down somewhat since this happened.
