copper 4-in-1 maille diamond pendantEven though this is probably only of passing interest to [livejournal.com profile] jenblue and possibly to [livejournal.com profile] gwynn_aaron (since there is a power tool involved), i'm showing off firstfruits of a new experiment.

Links are 3/8ths inch internal diameter, made from 8 gauge copper wire (dead soft- 8 gauge is tough enough to bend in this temper- i can't imagine trying to use a half-hard), cut from hand-wound coils with a Dremel with cutting disc. There's a bit of tool marking on them- depending on what i decide to do with this piece, i may buff them out. Ended up with two links left after completing the 4x4 diamond, so added them to one point as if it were a pendant. Dimensions (without the 'bail') are 9cm by 5cm, i'd guess the weight at about 50 grams.

Neat - it came out very well! Everyone's been on such a creative kick lately.

Hey, I like chain maile that wasn't done with power tools, too :-P

It looks nice, and the idea of cutting them with a Dremel was very good since it avoids the "pinched ends" that are so usual. You definitely need to get a pair of non-grip pliers for manipulating the links, though, to avoid the tool marks on them.

Copper is sexy. That's some hefty copper, y0.

I played with steel today!

Uh, yeah. When it takes both hands on the aviation snips, that's some seriously thick stuff. And to think i almost bought the 6 ga., just because it was only $0.34/ft where the 8 was $0.29/ft. Dayum. Woulda had to brace one end on the floor and push with both hands to cut it then. Not to mention needing to use the stove or halogen lamp to heat the damn stuff enough to bend it. ;-)

And i have probably 10 more feet. At about 8 rings a foot, that's 80 rings.

One of these days soon i's gonna have to order some nice rings i don't have to wind or cut myself.

And with the application of a Dremel buffing wheel, the tool marks are mostly gone. Still probably gonna remember to use the flat ones next time.
