[livejournal.com profile] greenshadows, you're right.

I do need to do private consulting and fix people's PC problems for them. Had another wireless network to work on tonight- this for midwife Michelle and her husband, and they insisted on paying. It's still hard for me to put a value on it or take money from friends.

I'm toying with the concept of a two-tiered structure- $40/hr for in-home, no mileage, but time starts when i leave home, minimum ¾ hour; or $30/hr for telephone or remote support, minimum ½ hour. Does this sound reasonable? I can fix most Windows issues within an hour.

Oh, and you are so good at it. My dad is still singing your praises.

I think you'd be good at it. Might be a bit hard to get started, but ultimately I think you could make it work with the help of heavy drinking and a punching bag... I don't know what they're called, but there's this company in Cleveland (they might be national, dunno) that basically has a bunch of geeks in a van and they will go anywhere -- home or business -- to fix your computer. Is this the kind of thing you're talking about? They're pretty popular here.

I'd suggest the following modifications, though. For your first tier I would suggest a higher rate (at least $45) and a minimum time of 1 hr. For the second tier a minimum time of 15 minutes.

As a widows user myself, I have to say that those sound like very fair rates, especially knowing you like I do and knowing that problems would actually get *fixed*. However, if I did not know you this would be a bit different. I think I'd still be fine with the rates, I just would be a little leery of how long it might take you to get things done. Not that windows support (HA!) would ever get the problem fixed, but time is money, especially when you're charging. :)

So if you set up a website or something, I would put up some quotes from some of the other people you've helped (since they're friends, those should be easy enough to get) perhaps saying how quickly you got any problems resolved. If I was reasonably sure you were quick, I'd have no problems calling for help.

Yup, [livejournal.com profile] jafftry's got some good advice - and I'd be pleased to provide a testimonial. :) In time, I think your word-of-mouth business alone could do it for you.
