Coming into this series, if there were any predictions of an upset of the Avalanche by the just-removed from expansion Minnesota Wild, the person making the pick would probably have been laughed at by all the hockey mavens.
Minnesota would have to play a perfect series to beat the Avalanche, or at least that's what an assessment of the rosters of both clubs would have one believe.
The Wild played in the playoffs exactly the way they did during the regular season. They didn't score goals in bunches, but they didn't give them up, either. As a result, Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg and company have been summarily excused from the post-season.
Not to diminish what the Wild achieved in beating Colorado in seven games, but a lot of the Avs demise needs to be laid squarely at the feet of Patrick Roy. Roy looked tired and flat-footed during much of this series, and gave up goals that an NHL star goalie simply shouldn't. Minnesota didn't need many gift goals. Even trailing three games to one after the first four of the series, the Wild had been in every game. Facing elimination, they rose to the challenge and won three successive 3-2 games to take the series.

My brother lives in Minnesota (Minnetonka, no less.) He'd better be a hockey fan now.
