Left work about 40 minutes early today- i figure after being in five hours longer than i'd planned on Friday and now having to come in on a day i'd requested off and been told i could have, i deserved it.
Went to talk to my friend (and fellow Detroit Red Wings fan) Jon for a bit today, and he was talking about what he was doing to stay in shape to play in the Tec-Rec league next year. This got me thinking about getting back into shape myself- perhaps we'll live close enough by that time that it'll be practicable to play, but now an hour+ drive after a 10:30 hockey game just wouldn't be feasible.
Anyway, when i got home, i decided it was time to get some exercise, so i went and got my inline skates and protective gear (no, i didn't skate in full hockey gear, just elbow pads, helmet and soft, volleyball-style knee pade; but i'm a firm believer that adults don't just need to tell their kids to wear protective gear, but they also need to do so themselves), and went for a bit of a skate- about 10 km, i think (twice around the outer perimeter of the Cascade Mall and Cross Court parking lots, with an extra few lengths behind Target and Office Max to bring the distance up). Didn't feel too bad at all. My skating mechanics are a little off (i've never been a particularly good technical skater, dating back to playing as a 5-6 year old growing up- i'm pretty much the forward who goes to the front of the net, gets pounded on and tries to block the goalkeeper's sight lines and/or tip the occasional shot), and it'll take a while to get the back/pelvis/hips/thighs alignment back, but i went at a fair pace and only glided when passing cars dictated that it was a good idea.
It reminded me in a way of the days back in Florida when i was seeing Ruth Ellen, and we'd do a fair bit of skating together- i was doing 80-100 km a week then, generally from my place to hers and then together from her apartment downtown to Sarasota Bay, around the bay park and neighbouring marina and back. Unfortunately, i'm almost twenty kilos heavier than i was back then, and not quite in as good a shape. I know i'm going to feel this tomorrow, primarily in my back and inner thighs (is this gracillus, or am i remembering the muscle name incorrectly?), but it's a good thing. I think i'm going to try to skate at least three times a week, weather permitting, until i start feeling a bit more like a once and future hockey player and a bit less like a slug.
Off to the shower with me know, lest i offend myself further by reeking of drying perspiration.
