Before the NHL
Feb. 3rd, 2010 01:13 pmI've been writing a series of little historical vignettes discussing hockey history before the advent of the National Hockey League. On the off chance that there are perhaps a few of you who might be fans who aren't members of
hockey, I thought I'd mention it here. The Before the NHL series can be found at the Crashing the Net blog. Our little tour through history has reached the one of the last two major predecessors to the NHL, the National Hockey Association. In this piece, we see the founding of the Montreal Canadiens, the first salary cap in professional hockey, instituted in part to ensure the league's financial stability and in part to keep an owner with deep pockets from buying players to assemble a team to win the Cup (it didn't work- even with his lack of financial restraint, he couldn't manage to place higher than second!), and the transition of the game into a form which would be recognizable today. The entire series is linked here for anyone wanting to read the earlier entries.
