Ups and Downs
Jan. 22nd, 2009 02:35 pmI had an interview scheduled this morning with a recruiter for a position at Microsoft- and found out upon arriving at it that the position was cancelled just today. No big surprise there, given what's happening in Redmond today.
After that, it was over to the Northwest Career Fair, only to find that in the decade since I've attended one of those cattle calls they've changed drastically. Used to be that 85% of the companies represented were software industry related, with most of the balance being medical or biotech. They also used to solidly occupy the Exhibition Hall under the Phelps Centre. This one was in the Rainier Room at Seattle Centre, had maybe a dozen companies participating, and only a single one connected to software. Fortunately, I had a few minutes to talk with the CEO of that company, who asked me specifically to get in contact with his senior recruiter. We'll see. I don't dare get much hope up these days.
Finally, my appointment for 4 this afternoon has been rescheduled to Monday.
*sigh*
At least there's some sign of life out there.
As an after thought, yesterday I discovered how to really confuse receptionists in the software industry- hand-carry them a cover letter and resume for an open position the company advertises. This particular position has been posted on four or five different places repeatedly since early November, but apparently hasn't been filled. Not sure if it's vapourware or if they've just not quite found what they've been seeking, but the job description's right dead centre for my qualifications and skill set, and it'd be nice to actually have the chance to convince them that since they have the position and i want a position and the aforementioned synchronicity exists that i could make both of us happy and just start there.
