Apr. 23rd, 2008 11:55 pmHad an interesting evening out with
maighdeanmhara- we went to the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular at the Paramont, showcasing classical Chinese dance and music. From an artistic perspective, it was absolutely lovely- the dancing was very nice, the various vocalists and instrumentalists unquestionably good at what they do. From a different vantage, it was a bit strange. The performing troupe is associated with Falun Gong, and they are subtle for values of 'subtle' approaching 'not subtle at all' by way of 'brickbat to the head' and at times the show felt evangelistic, at least in the sense of fundamentalist big-tent revivalist meets the Manchu court, and from the theatrical presentation, this version of agitprop loses nothing to Leni Riefenstahl or Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein.
We even got 'interviewed' during the intermission by a reporter (for an unidentified publication) whose English was marginally better than my Chinese, wanting to know our impressions of the show and whether we thought it reflected Chinese culture. I'd almost be interested in reading what gets written from the interviews, but suspect that it will be printed in simplified Chinese if at all.
