How about a hockey update?

The last game in St. John's Fog Devils history is in the book, a 4-3 loss. The team is relocating to Verdun, PQ next season, leaving The Rock devoid of major junior or minor league hockey. Yet another reason to hate the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, as the 'Baby Buds' drew well in St. John's, but were relocated as the Toronto Marlies (after Marlboroughs, a team name with roots in Hogtown almost as deep as the St. Pats.). Mile One Arena never quite got over the demise of the AHL St. John's Maple Leafs- and reputedly parts of the building still bear Leafs blue and white, not Fog Devils' red, black, silver and white.

Locally, the WHL Seattle Thunderbirds are closing out their final full season in the Emerald City before a planned relocation to the Seattle suburb of Kent some time before January 2009. I'd predict that many Seattle fans won't make the trip to Kent- the new arena there is going to be a concrete box much like the one in Everett, and, well, it's Kent. I'd be surprised if half the existing fan base from within the city made regular trips out to the east side when the arena opens there, especially since the one in Everett will be closer. Unlike the Everett Silvertips, though, the Thunderbirds won their first-round series and will continue in the playoffs against the Tri-Cities Americans after dispatching the Kelowna Rockets in seven games.

Moving to the NHL, the Detroit Red Wings just need one point in their final three games to win the President's Trophy as the best team in the regular season. My picks to face off in the Stanley Cup Finals, though, aren't going to include this year's Wings. Having seen a number of games in the last quarter of the season, i'll take ([livejournal.com profile] tattermuffin, you may wish to avert your eyes) the San Jose Sharks over the Montréal Canadiens in six games. San Jose has played stunningly well of late, and at this point are stronger in goal than my Wings- Dominik Hasek has been uninspired and hurt of late, and Chris Osgood has fallen off after an outstanding first half of the season. My other NHL team, the Ottawa Senators, have fallen apart down the stretch, and if they don't fall completely out of the playoff race (still a possiblity) will likely get swept in the first round by the Washington Capitals.
