And this is why i live here.

Today's sunrise was just stunning. With our latitude and meteorologic predilections, late sunrises which are almost completely obscured by clouds or rain aren't uncommon, which leads to a potentially bleak cycle of about a month and change where i go to work in the dark and come home in the dark, while remaining penned up at my desk away from any natural light for the balance of the time.

One of my weird writerly quirks is my preponderance of little notebooks. There's one in the doorpanel of each car, one on the bedside table, one by the computer desk and so on. If i'm wearing a coat, there's a decent chance there's somethign upon which to scribble in one of the pockets.

Today was one of those days where i needed to scribble- the sunrise just needed to get captured in words. It's a little too florid for me to be comfortable with in most cases, and there are at least two words which are just wrong, but here's the snippet:

Morning broke, sunlight [dappled- this is the wrong word. Striated? Painted?] dark pink stripes of dawn interwoven with the gunmetal blue bands of cloud, mantled at the horizon with black silhouettes of evergreens, crowned by the jewel that is the Mountain off in the southeast.

Not too bad for three minutes of scribble while driving (albeit in morning freeway rush hour traffic, which equates to "move two car lengths, write a word, move another car length, write two or three, move a hundred metres and so on."). Makes me wonder if i shouldn't try to build something around it just for practice.
