OK, those of you who read my little rants and ramblings on a regular basis have seen me talk about the Newfoundland band Great Big Sea, but, unless you listen to Canadian radio or one of the double handful of stations in the states which play their music, you've probably never heard them. I know the two times i've seen them have been among the best shows i've ever been to- as previously described almost a cross between a ceilidh and a rave.
Well, since you shouldn't deprive yourself of the chance to get to hear some of their stuff, i've put up a few selections for you.
"Run Run Away"(2.5 MB) is a contemporary song- it's a cover of the 80's pop-rock song originally recorded by one hit wonder Slade. GBS will occasionally cover a tune in their own style- they've also covered REM's "End of the World" and have done things like the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated" in concert.
The other two selections are traditional songs from Newfoundland. "I'se the B'y" (1.6 MB) is the story of a sailor in the St. John's area taking his girlfriend (possibly wife) to a dance, and mentions several of the area islands, as well as some of the more notorious *ahem* working ladies. The final belongs to a bit later period, dating to somewhere around the First World War. "The Chemical Worker's Song (Process Man)" (2.3 MB) is the story of a miner who worked the mines of Maritime Canada and the dangers thereof.
I'm thinking about also adding a live GBS cut- probably "Ordinary Day" even though some of the energy of the live performance doesn't translate well via recording. If you're interested, let me know. These files won't be available indefinitely- probably for less than a week, so i encourage you to grab them soon, listen to them in accordance with RIAA guidelines (gratutious legal disclaimer bit) etc., because they won't be there very long.
I'm also going to put up another bit of music shortly for your eclectic enjoyment- this one Seven Nations' cover of The Church's "Under the Milky Way." 80's wave music, played at near light-speed on bagpipes. It's simply something not to be missed. I wanna play stuff like this.
