Frank Gehry going downhill?

Just a few images of some of his more recent designs:

Rasin Building, Praha, Czech Republic

Guggenheim Bilbao Museum; Bilbao, Basque Country (still officially Spain)

The Experience Music Project; Seattle, Washington

Marques De Riscal Winery; Elciego, Spain

Note that "Ginger and Fred" in Prague is an elegant design which fits nicely in the city. The Bilbao museum looks a bit like a stylized ocean liner, very fitting for a port city. Then the EMP and the Riscal Winery, which are extruded metallic disasters.

Too many drugs for the Gehrster, I think. ;)

The EMP is even worse in person. A defacement of my glorious city. ::sighs::

I know. It's ten minutes from my house, and it's uncommon to go two days without passing within a block of it. Damn thing looks like an alien spacecraft which crashed at best.

It's just sad...the first two works are pure genius, and that winery is at least as bad as the EMP. Damn...I thought EMP was a cruel fluke, not a trend. :/

I'd have to agree. However, like it or not, it *almost* looks like a natural sequence. That should have been crushed before it went into realisation, but still...

The Guggenheim still looks beautiful though :)

Aaaaa! I've been up since 3:30am. After seeing these images I'm going back to bed and I'm going to have nightmares.

*twisted metal! twitch! sharp pokey-ness! sheer ugliness! twitch!*

Oh, and from now on, I'm hiding my imported beer in your fridge.

I have to say, even though I like the idea behind the Rasin building, the Bilbao museum is by far my favorite design of these four.

You are quite right about the EMP and the Marques De Riscal; they are hideous. Every genius has his lapse, though. (See Andy Warhol.)

I like the EMP building.

heh... when I first looked at that picture of the EMP, I thought it was joke, because it looked to me just like a spilled bag of garbage.

That could be a fun photo project tho. :D

OK, I'm not going to be quiet about it. I likeneat.

And I say this as someone that grew up in Washington and got to see Seattle as part of my morning horizon every day. The building suits the purpose. It suits the city and it suits the state that elected a farm animal as Governor (check your state history if you think I'm kidding).

Quote respectfully, origins aside, you don't live here, and accordingly don't have to see it every day. The monorail passage through the building reminds me of the Contemporary Resort at Disney World, but on acid. And Disney did it at the Magic Kingdom back in the 70s, if not earlier.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "suits the city," but it certainly doesn't fit its surroundings. Stealing another picture, here's an aeriel view:

That's the one angle from which i think it looks neat. Unfortunately, it still looks like the wreckage of some sort of spacecraft, which is fine, but NorWesCon won't be held there.

Yeah, the city is quirky and pushes the boundaries in quite a few ways, but this building is one we could do without. Especially since what's inside is so much less than what it's hyped to be.

Actually, I have a few shots of it from that angle. I still think it looks good. But, as the saying goes, you can't argue taste.
