Loads of mentions of the passing of Warren Zevon on my friends list the past few days, but not a single observation of the passing of another notable- Leni Riefenstahl. The site usually has a fairly extensive biography, filmography and the like, in a fair mix of German and English but is presently just showing a German obituary. I think the events of the 11th of September are something which the generation which witnessed them will long remember. We certainly don't need the annual media commemoration of what happened. Aside from the people who lost loved ones, who's time of mourning shouldn't be limited by others, i think that people need to get past it. Like so many other things, it was a tragedy. It's time to move on and learn what lessons there are which can be gleaned from it— and would hope that, as a nation, we learn the right ones. On a personal level, the most important lesson is that we cannot, under any circumstances, allow our government to arbitrarily abrogate civil rights. Once that course has been set, it's a short and slippery slope until we're back at something similar to the circumstances wherein Riefenstahl's "Triumph des Willens" was filmed.
