ravencallscrowsThe past two days have been, all in all, pretty damned good. Ended up going to Mt. Vernon both days.
On Friday, we caught both sets by Maggie's Fury, a local band which does stuff in the vein of Great Big Sea, Spirit of the West and the like. We've seen them a handful of times over the past few years at various area festivals, and, while they're not outstanding, they're a reasonably good group — and, oddly enough, one that sounds better live than they do on their recordings (shoot the producer or whomever does the final mix on their CDs, because the vocalists invariably end up sounding really thin, as if the treble or bass was completely rolled out, leaving just mids, and those too hot). Alexander always ends up dancin' like a monkey at their shows, and apparently we're memorable enough that Roxanne, Terry and James remember us and come up to say hi and see what's going on. Also picked up some nice new mugs from Clarissa of Purple Spiral Pottery.

damashita and went back, planning on catching the set today and taking more time to meander through the vendors there. Highlights of the day- a visit with the wonderful woodcarvers who make Stellar flutes- a wooden First Nations style flute, handcarved with immaculate detailing. Drooled over one in Purple Heart and one in Asian Ebony- both with a crisp tone, similar to what i'd expect from African Blackwood; and one in Juniper, which had a softer tone similar to what you'd hear on a Susato or Feadóg pennywhistle. I'd love to have one of these, but need to make time to practice on the instruments i already own before buying another (and what key would be another question- i've Clarke whistles in C and D, so probably neither of those, but possibly low C, even A or G- mid or low range here. Or B flat, to play stuff arranged for bagpipes....) Ahh, too many wants, and too limited a budget. Did i mention that they're six-holed, unkeyed flutes, so they finger the same as the whistles? Nevermind. I don't play the whistles well enough to deserve one of these. Oh, yeah, and they're in Shelton, not too far from wilson_lizard and zanzibar. Also visited with another potter, Jeff McDougall who makes some really pretty pieces. Added another mug- this one stoneware with a black glaze. And finally, the crowning touch, copper garden ornaments- two butterflies and a dragonfly, which will grace the garden at least until the arrival of the more organic sorts.
