Where's the gorram wooden spoon?

Actually, the usually noisy neighbours have been quiet tonight. They must be out of town or something.

Here's the 'official' copy about our recruiting event tomorrow. Tableau is a good place to work, and for those of you looking, maybe we have a spot which matches your experience. Hope to see some of you tomorrow.

Tableau Software is hosting "Aloha Friday" this week!
8/26 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. in the Lake View Courtyard, 837 N 34th St., Seattle, WA

We are hosting a fun Recruiting event outside of the Fremont office, complete with a taste of the tropics! A team of Tableau employees will gathered to meet with candidates and passersby outside in our courtyard area, while enjoying tropical flavored shave ice and the sounds of a steel drum band. Attendees will be encouraged to bring resumes, a business card, or a referral in exchange for a shave ice! We hope to see you there! www.tableausoftware.com/jobs

Up gruff and surly to go check out an iaido class which trains at a time which doesn't put it in direct conflict with any other familial commitments or obligations.

Wow, no one wants and is able to attend PNB's Contemporary 4 with us?

I feel like some sort of pariah now.

Chag Chanukah, ganzer michpoche. And if it's not your holiday, happy Wednesday.

It has been far too long since I've posted here. Mostly, that's been because I don't think I've had much to say which didn't fit in a Twitter-friendly space.
In summary:
Life is. I'm regularly- if not continuously- physically and emotionally exhausted.
Work is good. I work with an insanely senior testing department, and in a development environment almost completely devoid of ego.
With that said, though, there are some things which scare me. Because we're all senior (including dev), there's the feeling that everything's just magically going to get done.
So, we have a major release in just over a month, and in reality, we're not yet fully feature-complete. The glide path on our bug delta is going in the right direction, but the slope would get us finished... sometime in February. Even if we stopped finding bugs right now, fixes and verifications at the current rate would push us out in mid-December.
So, realistically, we're going to punt a lot of stuff. Doesn't make me a happy tester.

A friend has a new baby kitten she's named Schrödinger. The cat behaves oddly- it is suspected his existential paradox may have something to do with it. She mentioned the little guy was a foundling, so I'd asked of he'd been fed from a Klein bottle. In looking for an easy explanation, I tripped across a website, which sells all sorts of Klein bottles, including these nifty Klein bottle hats and Möbius scarves. I think I want a set now, in black/grey/white.

We just picked up ~45 books someone was giving away on Freecycle- programming references, network security, hunting and neutralizing malware and the like.
My paladin-child saw the listing and asked for them.
Are any of you out there willing to answer questions from him as he wades through them? I'll screen them and answer what I can (and make sure they're well formed expressions before handing any off), and will probably get through some of them ahead of him (cryptography, web app security and Perl) but there will probably be places where he'll get ahead of me fairly fast. I'd rather refer him to ethical qualified professionals than have him scrape together answers from script-kiddies and who knows what online.

Ok, hive. I could really use some positive mojo, prayers to %deity%, good wishes or whatnot.

Just found out from a friend that there is a product manager position opening at his place of employment which hasn't hit the website yet- they want someone to write specs and the like. This is solidly in the middle of my skill (and interest) set.

Also, today's bank statement shows we have $1600 or so less than our records show. This is particularly disconcerting because the statements have reliably showing a surplus of about that amount and we haven't been writing checks aside from rent and the rare exception, especially not to the tune of $3200 and probably not even $32.00.

Ow!

Aug. 29th, 2009 02:01 pm

Continuing my spate of weird injuries, this morning presented one which may take the crown. We all have nice, stainless steel waterbottles. The adult ones have a capacity of just over 1.1 litres- 40 ounces.
We have somewhat makeshift bedside tables- one is a short bookcase, the other is a converted component stereo cabinet or something similar. Either way there are probably 50cm/18inches between the top surfaces and the bed.
This morning, I managed to roll over and bump the one on my side, hard enough to knock the bottle off, and it fell... and landed about halfway between my temple and ear.
I have a nasty headache, ringing in my ears worse than any tinnitus I've ever had, and am more than a little dizzy even five and a half hours later.

Who amongst you are Twitterers? No need to respond if a) I already follow you or b) you aggregate tweets here.
If anyone is interested, I'm vtucherov there, although right now there's not a hell of a lot other than hockey, Canadian football, Sounders FC, general kvetching and the occasional tidbit of research for one of a few projects.

I have the weirdest accidents.
Had the dogs outside while I got the carpet in the living room steam-cleaned. Just finished that and took the cleaner back to the basement when the furry beasts started barking up a storm. Ran upstairs to bring them in before they ruled all the dogs in the neighbourhood (and in turn the chronic drunk who seems to take pleasure in yelling at anyone who has barking dogs), slipped going into the kitchen and caught myself with the other foot at an awkward angle and was rewarded by a loud snapping from my big toe. Ibuprofen, arnica and ice followed almost immediately. It's turning a pretty purple colour now.

Yes, I know RICE. Will be staying off it, keeping it iced and elevated as much as possible.
